Default 1997 maxum 2300sr alpha 1 gimble zerk

Hello all , this is only my second post. Had an issue with my carb, and im going to be testing it out next week. I was looking over the drive and noticed that my zerk fitting is missing from the gimble bearing. I did a little searching and noticed that some newer bearings are sealed. Now how could I tell if i have a sealed bearing or not? The zerk hole did have some old grease inside, with a pick i was able to get out and on the inside LOOKS as if there is a start head screw about half way down the hole? do the new sealed bearings come with something like this? Also , what is the most common grease when lubing the 3 other zerks on the drive?

Typically most leave the zerk fitting even with the sealed bearing. Only can tell by removing the drive and looking at the bearing

I did look at some pictures of the sealed bearings, and they do come with the star screw. I am assuming I have the sealed unit. Im not really wanting to take the lower apart just to find out. I do have some zerks for the skid loader laying around, I will throw one in and see if i can get it to take, if it pressurizes the grease gun I think i will know the answer. For the other fittings on the outrdrive, can I use marine grease? Or do these take a "special grease"?

Under Documents of this site you will find the Mercruiser manual for your outdrive which will tell you the grease to use. It’s a marine grease.
