Default volt gauge, needle shaky at idle?

This seems strange to me: the DC side of my fridge died recently. When troubleshooting it, noticed the volt gauge on the engine that runs my house battery system, the needle shakes very fine and fast at idle, steadies as soon as the throttle increases, and stays steady over idle. Is this some bad sign, or just a 29 year old gauge?

At idle a self energized alternator doesn’t regulate as well until there’s an increase in rpm. When reduced back to idle it should stay well regulated.
