I’m looking at purchasing a1998 2800. The motor is missing, but does come with The Bravo 3.
He’s asking $3000 for the boat and $2000 if I want the Bravo. Obviously, I want the Bravo.
It had the 7.4 motor, and I THINK(?) I want to stay with that.
Any thoughts?
But my real question is: when I’m looking for a replacement motor, do I only look for a (marine) engine, or can I was a standard car/truck engine. Has anyone done this before. Will the exhaust manifold cross over? Etc.
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Oh this question again.

Does it come with any of the engine components, carb/injectors, alternator, raw water pump, distributor, … if no you are looking at big costs. A non marine engine cannot be raw water cooled as it doesn’t have the right components to prevent corrosion so a closed cooling system would be needed, add $1K. You cannot safely use a non marine carb/injection system, alternator, starter, ignition as these are not ignition protected and the result is you may explode. IMO bargain boats seldom are.

I have the same boat and I agree with Mike. You should install another 7.4 Mercruiser and the bravo 3 for 2000 is a good deal unless it's damaged or corroded.

A single Engine 2800 SCR would have been a 7.4L Mercruiser.

Direct replacement will be:

7.4L
8.1L
8.2L
