Default 3200scr, starboard oil pan gone?

What I had hoped was a simple oil line leak, looks to be much worse. Seems the pan may have corroded through? Do I have to pull the motor to change it? engine runs good, 750hrs. 5.7L Merc, Bravo2

Depends on clearance between the pan and inner hull. Once the pan is lowered it needs to clear the oil pump pickup and crank journals. Then trying to keep the new pan gasket in place while installing it will be a challenge. In the end it will probably take less time to pull the engine. Are you thinking of doing the job or paying a mechanic? If the later he will only consider pulling the engine.

Smart decision. I did it once in a car without pulling the engine but I was young then. Royal PIA.

Pulling an engine isn't as bad as you think. I've done three I/O's. Putting it back again, that is slightly more stressful.

While it's out, paint the engine compartment.

What I'd be more worried about is how the pan corroded out? Often that is a result of water in the oil. It sits on the bottom. OT because the pan itself is sitting in water in the bilge.

I'd look at getting sorted out as well.

Default Pan leak

Boat comes out in a couple hours, engine ready to be pulled already. Ii never let water sit in the bilge, but I've had her only 3 years. Almost certain there's no water in the oil, but we'll soon find out. Yes, painting the bilge is my job today. It's gelcoat right, what paint is recommended?

I've used Vinylester for painting bilges. I use grey. Work in small batches.

Default oh oh - insurance!?!

got the engine out, pan did have a small corrosion hole. Bad news, however, there were the bottom wings of a piston or pistons in the old pan. engine was running fine with good compression, but one engine was just under 170 (168) whatever these numbers are? Looking for a long block now, or possible rebuild. Buddy just told me to check insurance, because broken piston might be covered!?! Did have a log strike on this leg in 2022.

Cracked piston skirts are not good and can result in scored cylinder walls. Do you mean one cylinder had 168 psi for compression? If so that’s a good number. 130 or less is the sign of a weak cylinder. I very seldom see broken piston skirts, did the mechanic give any thoughts as to why this happened?

Default No, other than log strike?

No idea how this happened and yes, that was the compression. Looking at possibly repowering now. Can sell the port engine which is only about 200hrs after a total rebuild. Locally there are two vortex longblocks avail, just need intake manifolds and I can swap the accessories of my engines. Each vortex abt cad 3000

Default Log strike?

That leg/engine did hit a log March 2022, had to rebuild the leg.

I guess a log strike could cause that damage but I would have thought the drive or engine coupler would have failed first.

Default drives had major damage

insurance spent cad28,000 (I added cad6000 upgraded stainless parts) on both legs, but this side took the harder hit.
