Default Turning engine off

Can anyone tell me what might be the issue, when I switch the engine off, the engine continues to fire/idle, and can splutter for up to 30 seconds...

Would this happen to be a 4.3 V6? They were know to have runon. Do you let it idle for a few minutes before shutting it down?
