when I try to engage into gear forward or backward it does not engage and the propeller will not turn. Its as though I am in neutral and the engine will only increases rpm speed when the throttle control just slides forward or reverse.
Look in the engine compartment to see if the shift plate is moving when pushing the control into gear. If not the upper cable may have broken else the lower cable may be broke. Remove the lower cable from 5he shift plate to see if you can manually shift into gear by pushing on the end.
I had this happen a bunch of times. As suggested above, hope that it’s just a stuck neutral button. If so just take the button out and spray the inside with something to remove gunk. For me it ended up having to replace the shifter control box and changed the cables while at it ($900)
