A little piece of Trivia for you.

Football = "Association Football" (Soccer in the US)
Rugby = "Rugby Football"

Rugby Football in itself is a variation of Association Football. Rugby Football was the first of the games to be both introduced and accepted in the United States. We introduced a number of variations to Rugby Football, and in order to avoid confusion, we dropped the name Rugby and referred to it as Football. This in itself isn't that unusual, since all of Europe also seems to simply refer to Association Football as "Football" and Rugby Football as "Rugby".

When the game of Association Football was introduced, we already had Rugby Football (Rugby) and our US variation of "Football". So we adopted Association Football as "Soccer" so as not to confuse the game with our variation of Rugby Football, which we were already calling Football by that time.

So now you know why we call Football Soccer and why our game is called "Football".

OK, So ??
The proper name still is american football.
Football is a very old game and played by the foot
even the Mayan people played football without touching the ball by hand (with knees and hips)
this game has history and it go's way further back than the founding of the states

Just sharing a little trivia with you. No need to get defensive. I don't see anywhere where it was stated that they weren't old games, or didn't originate in Europe. Geez you RUGBY FOOTBALL guys are sensitive!! It's not like I said, "By and large here in the US it's a childrens game", did I?? LMFAO!!!!

About 85% of the worlds population. Super Bowl -vs- World Cup. Google the viewing stats on those.

I don't care about either personally.

Wasn't going to weigh in but......

Football is football- who really cares if its gridiron, soccer, rugby, Aussie rules or hajji sack!

It's grown men chasing each other around a field touching and feeling each other whilst trying to hold or touch some balls....... Not that there's anything wrong with that

Call it what you like - they are all over paid for someone who really only works 1 day a week for 1/2 a year at the max and only practices to work the rest of the time

It's not like they are saving lives
