Default Engine shut off coming into neutral

Hi guys, 1997 3.0LX and I’m pulling my hair out with the shift cut out switch. When coming into neutral from forward or reverse the engine dies. I’ve adjusted the shift cable so it’s exactly 6inches from the end of the cable to the adjustment nut and then turned it 4 complete turns. Am I adjusting it wrong or how should this be done? Should I bend the lever in the cut off switch ?? Thanks for help in advance.

Most likely the lower shift cable is worn and has too much drag causing the shift interrupt to stay closed too long.

Thanks again Mmwjr. That’s a replacement cable which requires the Oleg to come off isn’t it? It’s not a straight forward fix?

Correct the outdrive needs to be removed to replace this cable. I typically replace the bellows and gimbal bearing while it’s apart. Also a good time to replace the trim limit switch and trim sender.

BTY you can call me Mike.

Thanks Mike. Sounds like a winter job if I can stretch it out till then. Trim sender all needs replaced as well so sounds like a good time to do the lot (including bellows). Thanks for your help.
