I guess a log strike could cause that damage but I would have thought the drive or engine coupler would have failed first.

Depends on clearance between the pan and inner hull. Once the pan is lowered it needs to clear the oil pump pickup and crank journals. Then trying to keep the new pan gasket in place while installing...
