Default Engine starting issues

Hi all,

I have an issue with my 350 Mag engine that I was hoping to get some advice:

The issue first occurred a few weeks ago while I was sitting at idle waiting for a pick up. The engine revs started fluctuating. I tried to push the throttle but nothing happened and it then cut out. Trying to start did nothing at all. Gave it some time and changed the battery selector for both to number 2. I also squeezed the fuel prime a couple of times (should have done one or the other). Fired straight back up after that so assumed corrosion in the selector.

Went out the following week and after turning off the engine it wouldn’t restart. It would try to turn over but sounded weak. Turning the selector did nothing this time. Jump starter had no effect.
Noticed the battery gauge was reading 10V.

Mechanic has been out to look. Tested batteries and all good. Checked all cables an earths and also good. He managed to get it to fire up after a few tried. Said there was a lot of black smoke when it did but I’m guessing we’d just flooded the engine trying to start?

Anybody had something similar? The low voltage at the gauge is throwing me but not sure if this is normal when not running?
