Default 3300SCR hydraulic fluid leaking under the helm

I have an oily fluid (smells like transmission fluid) leaking from under the helm and it keeps seeping. Any ideas what could it be? I hAve what looks like a rack and pinion behind the helm but don’t see where the fluid is coming from.

Only things that come to mind are the compass is leaking or the speedometer tube is leaking allowing sea water to drip. If the compass you should be able to see the fluid level drop as a bubble at the top of the dome.

Do you have hydraulic steering? If so that might be where it is coming from.
Look to see if you gave hoses on the back of the helm.
Good luck.

Hey Don in post 1 the OP says it looks like he has rack and pinion steering which is the way it came from the factory.

I know but it may have been changed to hydraulic at some time.
Just thought it was worth mentioning.

Is the 3300 IO's or inboards? If it's inboards, it would probably be hydraulic and there would also be an oil fill at the helm itself. If it's IO's it's more than likely power steering assisted.

If it's oily, I would more than likely discount it being the speedo. That would leak raw water. The only other thing with oil is the compass.

The 3300 should be I/Os with steering assist which is isolated to the stern of the boat. Depending on the body of water he boats on the water may have a oily feel from pollution.
