If it's in the center of the end cap it may be...
If it's in the center of the end cap it may be the bolt that holds the end cap on.
I would expect it to be on the side of the HE near the raw water inlet.
Is it a factory or aftermarket system?

There should be a anode on the heat exchanger....
There should be a anode on the heat exchanger. Look for a brass plug, remove it and it has an anode attached.
