I sounds like only a single engine "starts the engine" but none the less needs to determine how they are currently wired first then figure out how he wants it set up.

3 batteries and how many switches? Sounds like only 1 that is off - 1 - 2- both. If so One of the two positions (1 or 2) should start engine while the other postion is for house.
