There is a gasket. No smacking will fix it, just replace it. There is a reed style which isn’t as susceptible to fuel sloshing in the tank.

Before removing the fuel sender make sure the tank is about 1/2 full and the boat is level. Yes you can move the sender arm to see if the gauge needle moves but this is not very accurate.

Disconnect the sender wire and the gauge should read empty, then ground the wire and the gauge should read full. If the gauge passes this test replace the sender.
