Mike is correct about the gimbal bearing grease fittings. Usually the newer bearings come with a plug to replace the grease fitting but that doesn't mean the previous owner installed it. Look inside...

Not all steering systems have grease fittings....

Not all steering systems have grease fittings. You did the right thing lubing the exposed shaft.
