Its a brand new gauge

Does anyone know where the signal comes from is it from the alternator or the coil?

My rev counter doesn't seem to be reading right it sits at about a 1000 for a while then jumps to 3000 anyone got any ideas why this is? its a new gauge, is the signal from the alternator or the...
