None the less I would put the old one in to see if it fixes the issue as even new parts can be bad. I believe the new ones have three wires where the old one only had two connections, is this how...

Yeah figured that out as I latter saw you said 1996 and its a 2700 which to my knowledge only came with the 7.4

The ignition sensor is not a normal maintenance item and typically only gets replaced upon failure. Ignition timing should always be checked/set after replacing any ignition component however...
