It would be okay to do in water, if you can see what you are working on. The speedo hose goes up above the water line and wouldn't cause any problems.

Trying to find out the thread size on my drain pan, without removal. Can't find this info anywhere I've looked. Anybody help? Is it a common size across most pans? 97 mercruiser 3.0 LX.

My '97 3.0 LX with a B2 has done it as long as I have had it. I asked original owner and he said did it from new. It does spin much slower and sometimes not at all. Higher RPM's make it more likely...
