Default winch sizing

So what is the proper way of sizing the winch on the trailer.
I plan on replacing the whole thing as the bracket is what broke, the winch itself is fine but the bolt holding the locking dogs pulled through the metal. Can't find a rating on the current one, but have not yet looked that hard either.

If this is for your 1700 SR a new winch and strap should be not a problem. There are many trailer websites to order from or if you have someone local I would go that route first.

Anything around 5,000 LBS rating is IMHO what will work for you. You might get by with a 3500 LBS but if it were me I would stick to the 5000 ibs rating. The stand which the winch sits on has a bolt pattern which is about the only problem you will have to matching up.

Hope this helps

Roger

Thanks for the input Roger!! Much apprieciated!!

Went to store and looked, they only had a 3500lb in stock and that was $60 or two speed ones for even more $$ but same weights... Went home to play with it... The existing one is a Fulton 1400 / 700 LB, first wrap / subsequent... My thoughts were like yours too Roger, but if original was that small... I plan on stopping into the store tonight and picking up that 3500. I guess since the boat is only 1850lb + gear & fuel it should do. The strap should be able to be moved over - took it off last night, darn its about 20' long - I could hook the boat up behind the trailer.
