Default What should I be aware of inspection

I have a 2000 2400 SCR under contract subject to inspection. Are there particular items that this boat needs looked at?
Thanks

We are in the process of buying a 2000 3300 SCR. Just had it surveyed. Things to look out for:

1. State of the bellows for the outdrive. Do they have cracks? How old are they? They may be in need of replacment.

2. Moisture in the transom. With the drive(s) going through there, there is a risk of water making its way in. Especially with stern drives.

3. Delamination of the fibreglass anywhere.

4. Elevated moisture levels. Some hull readings may be high depending on what bottom paint is used.

5. Check the bilge. Is there any oil or whatnot in it?

Those are just some things. Others may chime in. It's worth the money to have a competent surveyor go through the boat. Costs some momey in the short term, but can save you a ton in the long term.

Take it for a test ride and verify it can achieve WOT of 4400-4800 rpm. Take a IR sensor and once the engine is at operating temperature take readings of the thermostat housing and exhaust components to verify their not to hot. Check oil level and condition, drain some gear lube to look for water or metal filing.

I don't worry about that other than it being a sign of the PO not keeping up on maintenance items.

Any boat I buy gets a full maintenance completed and if the bellows are needed they get replaced as well.

When doing WOT run, watch engine temp to see if it rises. If it does it could be sign of problem with head gasket or cooling system. Check that the gauges work and that drive trims up and down. Walk around the deck and check for soft spots and that the seats are secure. Look for a list as it sits in the water or while running. Watch the engine run and use flashlight to check for drips of any kind. Drips could mean cracked block.
