Default Steering Wheel Position

Simple- probably stupid - question...
I have a 2004 2100 SD. 5.0 MPI Alpha....

The steering wheel is about 45 degrees off of "center" when cruising. Frustrating.

Is it possible to remove the wheel....set it "straight" and be done?

Or is there a different adjustment or do I learn to live with it?

Thanks in advance.....

Rocky

Don't know if the wheel has splines that would allow it to be off and hence recentered. I do know if the swivel shaft at the transom is not installed onto the steering arm correctly you will get the same issue but also the outdrive will not turn fully in one direction, this was on the old style 70's I think the newer units don't allow this.

I know West Marine has a rudder position devise (outdrive position for you) that you attach to the steering wheel in the middle and it will show where or what position your rudder is...straight, left or right.

If that is what you are trying to correct.

Thanx! I am going to take the wheel off this weekend and look, then.
I am also going to look into the rudder position thingy too.. That looks like a good idea.

More education coming my way......:-)

I guess I have to wonder why it isn't centered. IOW, assuming it was installed centered when the boat was built, and assuming no one has removed it since - or messed around with the linkage, then there's gotta be a reason it's no longer centered. If so, then pulling it and repositioning it only masks the real issue.

I like Mikes idea; first see if the drive turns to the right and left by the same amount.

SS396 - Fair Question...I bough the boat last year, and it was this way when I got it. So, maybe something has been messed with...I wouldn't know. It seems to turn as sharp to each way in use,but I have never taken a tape measure to the outdrive...

I may have to look at that....

Thanks!

You may want to look under the helm as rack steering can come loose creating play. Possible that rack and pinion gears slipped?
