Default Speaker vibration, Brilliant or not

Hi all,

I posted about the speaker vibration from the radar arch and I think I may have a solution. I took an old speaker, put it in a baggy, flipped it upside down and sprayed the outside with low expanding foam. I then removed the speaker and presto, I have foam speaker inserts for the arch. My question now is should I go one step further and seal the foam with something, varnish etc. I havn't tried them to see if they fit in the arch, but I should be able to sand or cut them to fit.

Brilliant...or not?

not sure if this is brilliant or not....does the foam interfere with the travel of the cone in any way??....did you try to seal/isolate the speaker from the arch??...remember that the arch is a hollow tube basically and will reflect any noise ....so...isolating the speaker and it's mounting plate will probably do wonders.......let us know and take pic's...kinda hard to visualize what your doing..

Well A for effort and 'yankee' ingenuity. There is another concept to consider. SP is right on that the travel of the cone cannot be impeded in any way. The other consideration is air volume and flow. There is a reason speaker boxes have air holes in them. The magnet moves the cones, which diplace air to make sound. The air is displaced on the front side of the speaker, but the back side of the speaker needs air too. IF the backside is completely sealed, you will create a vaccumm and it will be very difficult for the magnet to move the air. Think of a clogged pump. If you have a manual pump head, try closing the seacock and pumping. That will give you a good idea of what the speaker may incur. As long as the cone can move freely and there is air movement on the backside you should be fine.

How water tight is the expanding foam? I would hate to see it start to wick moisture into the inside of the radar arch.

Thanks for the replies! I may have to re-think the foam. I'll put a few holes for air flow and test it with water.

I think I miss boating and have too much time on my hands!!!!
