Default Simpson Lawrence Windlass

My Simpson Lawrence Windlass moves in both directions for approx 5 secs then binds up and trips the fuse, any ideas of possible causes.

Is this a new issue? If not the wrong size rode may be in use. If yes maybe the rode is binding in the locker but that would only be for deploying. If you remove the rode from the windless will it run?

The boat is a year 2000, I've had it 3 years, first issue with the windlass. With no rope/chain attached the windlass moves for 5 secs in either direction then trips the fuse. The windlass will not turn freely with the socket tool in the top, just moves it a 1/3 of a turn. The control switch is corroded on the back and a loose connection. Bought a new switch will try over the weekend.

I doubt the switch has anything to do with the fuse blowing. Most likely either gears binding or a bad bearing. Do you have an exploded view you can post? You could partially disassemble it and see if the motor runs without the gears.

Replaced the toggle switch which was well corroded. Took the chain and rope off the windlass and was able to free up the binding windlass. Worked well in both directions with no load. Put the chain and rope back on the windlass, sending anchor no problem but struggled to retrieve, may next look at the battery condition, I've had the boat 3 seasons and do not know when the previous owner changed them.

That’s progress. Also check that battery connections for corrosion.
