Default ref 29ft Maxum power

I'm really looking hard at a 2001 Maxum 290 cuddy. Its powered by a single 7.4 liter V8. Does anyone know if this is enough power? Thanks

that is almost the exact same specs as my 1997 2800 SCR in regards to LoA, Beam and displacement, which also came with a 454. I think that is fairly standard. The HP varied between 300 - 325 on the 454 depending on the year, although I think that 300HP is more accurate, even for those boasting 325 HP.

I've seen a fairly consistant split regarding opinions on this. Some consider this a great power package, many including several mechanics I've spoke with think this is a bit under-powered.

I recently upgraded to a 496 MPI (375 HP) and the difference is amazing. More power, more torque, easier to start and a Max. rpm of 5000+ (the 454 max RPM is between 4200-4600). I can run at the same speed at lower RPM's and have much more room in regards to overhead for more RPM's. SO the engine is theoretically not working as hard.

However, if it's not broke, I wouldn't fix it. You don't have to look hard to find things to throw money at on a boat. I only replaced mine because the motor blew onthe 454. Mostly the result of the previous owner overpropping it and lack of regular maintenance.

we have a saying in the engine business...there's no substitute for cubic inches....bigger is always better...cept when you have twins!!...

but the 7.4v8 is definitely a power house...and with a b3 drive...hard to beat...anything with that much torque and hp is gonna be more than enough for a 29 ft boat...when you pass 30 ft then your going to see twins the norm....

Thanks for the feedback. I just sold a 25ft crownline and it had the same 7.4 liter. I loved the motor. I just didn't know if it was enough power for the much bigger and heavier 29 footer. More feedback by other members would be appriciated. Thanks again
