Missed your comment on this. That's the shift bracket and as stated transfers the motion of the helm shift cable to the outdive shift cable. It also has the shift interrupt switch on it which shorts out the ignition when coming out of gear to remove the load of the dog clutch.

I boat came with a stainless steel prop. Mercury website recommends a Mercathode. Do I need one? if I have one will it be the blue one they show when I googled it? would it be in the engine compartment?

Yes it's blue and would be mounted on top of the engine. Do you keep the boat in the water during the season? If so then yes I would recommend having it. If you trailer then it's a nice to have but not a must.
