Default Portable Generator Options

Greetings once again friends... My wife and I spent a hot humid and sticky weekend on the boat this past weekend at Lake Hartwell, SC. We do not have a Generator on our SCR3200 although we have air conditioning onboard if we could get to some power. Our close friends who let us park at their dock on weekends do not have an AC service strong enough to run just our Air conditioner...so the though was brought up, why don't we split the cost of a portable generator that would do the job. Then I thought for a minute, and it seems that even when we spend on the hook, in a cove, we're always right against the shoreline where we could set out a portable generator. I cant spend 5k for an internal genny this year, but I could afford a portable. Any thoughts on how robust a portable unit I would need to run just or Air conditioner? And, do you have any experience with good or bad brands? Thanks...Jeff

well..alot of folks are using the Honda EU2000 gennies tied to the stern swim step....works well and is fairly quiet....just don't think of running them in the engine bay....it's not rated for that by the coast guard....the price is reasonable at about a grand for one....you can find them on line for a few bucks less too..

I wouldn't be running the genny anywhere but on the dock that I was moored to...or the beachhead that I was backed up to....keeping it off the vessel altogether. I'm just not sure if the Honda 2000 can run my marineair system....I don't know the btu of the unit, but I would guess its around 16k btu.

the honda eu200 is used by alot of folks with big AC's...check it out....what you need to check is the amp draw at start up...after that what demand at steady state...
