Default Notch in hard chine on 1800SR

On my 2003 1800 SR there is a fairly complicated notch on the hard chine - where the side of the hull meets the bottom - approximately beneath the helm. I have seen a similar feature on some other hulls, usually on upscale boats. I believe that it is probably to break the suction on the hull and cause some turbulance to reduce friction and increase speed. Then again I am only guessing.

My question is, if this was such a good idea why was this feature dropped when the SR3 was introduced? Cost?

I wonder if the fact that Regal was sued over their FasTrac hull design might have something to do with this and I think Brunswick Marine may also have been involved in that case as well?

last yr I was at the factory in arlington wa...we got a cool tour..had some time with the engineers ...reviewed a few things and offered them our views on some items...
they had a boat on a dolly where it had the chine cuts...I asked that very question...is this a hydrodynamic device to break the stiction of the water??...by the way..my boat has the very same thing...

well..the engineer said...and I quote...nah!!...we just thought it looked cool...it doesn't do a thing ....now if it was all the way across the hull like the formula's..then it would have more of a step effect on the boat..."..

so..to answer your question...nope..it's for looks only...doesn't do a thing....the boat is so small and powerful comparative that it isn't affected by most hydrodynamic hull devices....the boat has more effect with the chines and stepped hulls than little cutouts....

hope this helps...
