Default Maxum 2700 Single

I want to upgrade and am considering buying a 2700 SCR. But after looking at two options, I have a question: is a single engine with Bravo 3 enough for such a large and heavy boat, even if it’s a 7.4 long block?

I believe the 2700 had an 8' 6" beam (259.08cm), while the 2800 had a 9' 9" beam (297.18cm). I didn't know they made a 2700 in twins.

I had a 2800 with a single 454 (7.4L) which I later repowerd to a fuel injected 496 (8.1L). That is about the biggest I would want to go with a single. Loaded with gear it took a bit to get her on plane.

Shrew is correct the beam is 8’6”. The 2700 was redesigned in 2000. The earlier version typically had a BBC with Bravo 2 drive and the newer version had a SBC with a Bravo 3. A friend of mine has the newer version with the SBC 5.7 and is satisfied with it. Like all boats the number of crew and gear weight will impact performance.

Best way to know is a sea trial. Performance is usually a function of engine HP plus prop “grip” plus weight distribution/ hull shape. Not an exact comparison but my 2900 had twin 4.3’s with alpha drives and once I upgraded to stainless props, it did great getting on plane. I had 380HP going into 2 props, and I think you would basically have the same with the 7.4 & B3 drive. There might be a small penalty in grip, but it’s also a smaller boat and probably 500lbs less engine weight than I had. My friend had a single 7.4 or 8.1 in an 3000 SCR and it was definitely undersized for that boat.

Thanks a lot gents.
The boat, I am looking for is 2000 Maxum 2700 SCR that’s equipped with a single 7.4L (454) big block and a Bravo 3 drive.

I don’t expect speedboat performance, but I’m hoping this config will offer decent cruising power and plane without too much drama, even with some gear and passengers on board.

Does this sound like a solid, reliable setup for this boat? Anything I should watch out for with this particular combo?

As mentioned a sea trail will provide a good idea on how it performs. I think that you’ll be happy but that’s all subjective.

Hi Ivan - We recent purchased a 2000 Maxum 2700 with the 7.4L MPI and Bravo 3. We find the engine enough for this boat. Performance wise, we cruise at ~26-28 mph at 3500 rpms. We downsized from a 40’ Sea Ray Sedan Bridge so, for us, time to plane and cruise speed are much improved. But that’s relative to our previous experience. FWIW we really like our Maxum 2700.
