Looking at a 2005 2400 SC3!
Hi Everyone! First post here....
New to boating, this will be our first boat! Found what I feel like is a pretty decent deal on a 2005 2400 SC3. It has the 5.0L with Alpha 1 outdrive. Can anyone tell me want to look for on this boat? It only has 65 hours on it and looks very clean but I will have a survey done if we decide to buy. Is that motor/outdrive a decent setup for that boat? Good for water sports?

Welcome aboard.
Nothing special about this model so just the normal boat things to look at: Rot in floor, transom, stringers; Engine health, condition of oil, temp, ...; seats in good shape, .....

Can anyone tell me the difference between the SC and the SC3's?

5.0L should be a 305 with a 2bbl carb rated at 220HP. This should do fine with 4 adults but will start to feel the load with more people. It will just have slower time to plane mainly.

It's EFI, not carb...260hp. What are the big differences with the alpha and bravo outdrives?

Alpha is for lower HP set ups, the raw water pump is in the middle of the drive and the lower needs to be removed to access it. Alpha uses a dog clutch for shifting.
Bravo uses an engine mounted raw water pump like inboards do. It also uses a cone clutch which is must stronger than a dog clutch and does not require a shift interrupt switch as the Alpha does.
Tons of Alphas out there and they provide good life.
Bravo come in three types BI for high power sport boats, BII for big cruisers, BIII counter rotating props works great for all applications.

Your best bet is to hire a marine surveyor, which I strongly suggest. They will test for things you cannot see with the naked eye, like moisture levels and hull and transom integrity. They are expensive, so you really only want to survey a boat that you intend on buying. $500-$1000 to warn you to walk away from potentially paying out 10's of thousands.

Thank you for the advice everyone. We had a survey done and are buying the boat! We are very excited as we live on a canal and will be using it a lot this summer to cruise Lake Erie. Just gotta get this ice to melt now!!
