Question Jabsco Head Issue

I'm a new 2000 Maxum 3000SCR owner and so far loving it. One question I have is, how do I know how full the head holding tank is. There is no electronic or sight gauge that I have found. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Most common way is to open the engine hatch and look at the holding tank which is translucent so you can see how full it is. Otherwise you will need to add a tank monitor kit that will display at the helm.

I can't see thru mine. I can see the water level in the fresh water tank but not the holding tank.

If you can not see into the tank you need to use this to clean it out. Zaal Noflex Digestor
With a clean tank you'll be able to see just how full it is.

Not true.. My holding tank is a very thick material. I would not expect to see through it.

The wall in my engine compartment in front of the holding tank is a fire retardant type material that I can't see through. It's pretty well Sealed around all 4 sides. I can see the top of it by lifting up the center cushion platform in the aft cabin. I'll need to do some work in finding a simple solution. Thanks for everyone's input.

Mike, in the 3000, the crap tank is in the aft cabin as you mentioned. There is no real way to see.

I am considering adding a gauge to mine because there is just no way to see anything but the top of the tank in the 3000.

Welcome aboard mikebmaxum3000!!!

If its a manual pump, then one way to tell when it's full is the down-stroke will begin giving much more resistance. AND, it'll start coming out the vent tube.

Technically, contents shouldn't e allowed to sit for more than 5 days in the blackwater tank. If you're a weekend warrior like most of us, then the easiest thing to do is get pumped out at the end of the day on Sunday. This allows you to start every weekend with an empty head (no worries and no chores to start the weekend). It also significantly reduces head odor.

Depending on the number of people and how conservative you are with water, you will eventually figure out about how many consecutive days you can go before needing a pumpout. Here are my rough numbers for 2 people.

I estimate we fill aprox. 6+ gallons daily (2 adults). We are very conservative with flushing, (we drink a lot of beer).

Tank Size / Pump Out Frequency
10 gal. = daily
13 = every other day.
20 = every 3 days

That's way more often than I've ever pumped on any boat. In places like lake Powell, we'd go 10 days between pump outs. There really isn't an option there.

We use the RTB780 from www.microbialogic.com. Best stuff on earth. I switched to a different microbe based treatment for a while, but im back to the 780. Completely liquefies it, and zero smell.

Thanks Shrew and Kevlar. Great info. I'm sure I'll have many more questions as we learn our new boat. Happy cruising!
