One sure sign is your temp gauge goes up (and stays) beyond the normal operating temp.

yep..that's the main one.....best thing to do is have it replaced about every yr....at the beginning of the boating season...just one less thing to worry about......

if you have an alpha one drive...it's really really simple to do....
but ...overheating can be the manifolds are bad also......

oils...both engine and drive...grease prop shaft.....check serpentine belt....engine alignment......nut/bolt check.....impeller..(25 bucks if you do it yourself)...clean and replace the flame arrestor.....might be a few other things...
but I can't think of them right now since I'm braindead .....today was wake up...go to the store for groceries....and go to the boat to clean it.....it was a mess after 9 days on the boat....

from what I understand....the drive is off....a shaft is put into the crank shaft extending out of the transome...then the engine is turned over without starting ....you'll see the shaft wobble a bit...the engine mounts on the stringers are loosened and the engine is moved a few inches to get full alignment....then retighten the engine mounts...add drive...test....
