Default HIN number- engine number

Does anyone know if it is possible to get hold of an engine number from the HIN number, is there a database somewhere or who could I contact?
I am trying to get hold of basic parts ie, a sepentine belt but can not find the engine number anywhere. The motor in question is a merc 5.0mpi 2002 raw water cooled running an alpha drive with power steering but I am being told that there are 6 different belt possibilities... If anyone has a similar setup and could suggest a part number that would be great. Boat is a 2002 maxum 1900.

You could probably call Us Marine and give them the HIN number and they could tell you the Engine number that was shipped with that hull. However, I couldn't say for sure, nor do we know if the PO repowered the engine. My boat would show the serial number for a Mercruiser 454, but I have a 2009 496 so it wouldn't do me much good.

Thanks Shrew, US marine had the info, engine is original. Good service from a discontinued brand.
