Default fuel tank replacement

Hello to all. I have a 1991 2500 SCR. just re-powered with a 350 mag mpi bravo 1 (nice!!!). unfortunatly i discovered that my main tank has a leak. it seems like the only logical way to get it out is by cutting the floor to the aft cabin. has anyone ever had to do this? any other sugestions would be appreciated. i do have a 18 gal. aux. tank on the starbord side and i could put another one on the port, but i'm thinking re-sale and range. thanks, pete

pete
sorry to hear about your tank whoa's....but it happens....don't know why they can' make a fuel tank that won't fail ...anyway...yep..had to have my bayliner fuel tank replaced when it was new and once it's done...there was no way to tell it was ever done...other than it wasn't leaking anymore....
so..to answer your question..yep..that's the way it comes out...thru the mid berth....it's one heckuva job but that's the way they do it..

........"had to have my bayliner fuel tank replaced when it was new" ? does this mean it was under warranty? if not how much did the job cost you to have it done?

Pete, good luck in fixing that; saw you were launched already, so at least you can tackle the problem so early in the season. We're at TOH Guy Lombardo this Summer, but will be back there for the Winter.

yep..it was covered under warranty and from what I understand...it cost close to 3 grand US to replace...took 2 wks for the shop to test, verify and then remove the tank and reset a new one and glass the decking back in down in the midberth..

I just finished replacing my aluminum 70 gallon belly tank. It's a two man job. You will need to cut the mid berth and engine bulkhead. The 70 gallon tank was 39"wide'by 44"long and 11" deep. I cut 44" and the tank came out OK. It slides out through the engine compsrtment with the endine cover removed. It fits without removing anything else. Getting the gas out is a problem. Use an external electric fuel pump. RDS makes the identical tank. See the RDS website. The Tank is about $550 plus shipping and wieghs about 90 pounds Ships at about 130 pounds). It took about two hours and two guys to take it out and 30 minutes to put it back. There was some prep work before putting it back. Rebuilding the mid berth is a pain but if you save everything you cut out it should go smoothly.

Best of Luck.
