Default Engin getting water in cylinders

I have a 1997 Maxum 2300 SC with a 5.7 Mercruiser & Alpha 1 leg.
I have had a problem with water seeping into the cylinders when the engine is turned off.
I now have to pull my engine to replace the fly wheel since I've broken off a few teeth and have a bare spot. I was talking to a buddy and he has had the same thing with his, 1995 Maxum 2300 SC, his was kepted moured. He is now replacing his engine. Has anyone experienced this problem? What did it take to correct this.

more than likely It will be corroded exhaust risers the outer water section is leaking in to the exhaust section then back down past the exhaust valve in to the cylinders, That is what killed my engine and had to be completely rebuilt

If you drain down your manifolds after each use you will minimise the damage till you can get it sorted

you shouldn't have to drain down your manifolds everytime you use it....it's more than likely the flapper valves are bad and the risers are leaking into the cylinders....

I know you shouldn't but if they are corroded its not a bad practice as probably the only time it will allow water back in to the engine is when you switch off

Corroded exhaust risers allowing water to flow down into the cylinders is defintely the problem. But don't delay in replacing them. If the leak gets too bad and too much water gets in a cylinder, you can get a hydrostatic lock when you try to crank the engine over and break a rod.
