Dangers of Snow Loading

For the past several years I have been using a porta-shelter to store my 1900SR. In past years I have added extra bracing with 2x4s to ensure the snow loading did not create a problem in the winter. Well needless to say, this year I forgot and paid for it. Here are the pics of the shelter after 18" of snow. I was out of town for a sick family member and didn't get the snow cleared off.

No damage to speak of after clearing the snow, but I got lucky it didn't smash the glass.

Looks like I will be splitting the cost of shrink wrap equipment with my co-workers next year.

Lesson learned! I hope others can learn from my mistakes.

My son has something like yours for his runabout, but he doesn't live in the middle of snow country like you. He has to deal with the wind.

Yes lucky nothing was hurt accept the support poles. Back to the drawing board...

I use a full cover for my boat JP, with a steel support pole in the center of the cockpit. Seems to do the trick but we rarely get the amount of snow you do. If we did I'd have to use a second pole.

I had the same thing happen a few years back ...... wet heavy snow did it for me . Luckily no damage for me either. The feeling in your gut when you see it for the first time is something terrible !!!!

I just use a mooring cover and a couple layers of tarps now ..... but the shelter was nice to have in the summer too , kept the sun off her !!!

I wonder if a heavier duty shelter woulda worked... I know we have actually had bulletins from our building deprtment about the normal shelters not being any good over winter... Nice to hear that the boat is all okay though. Sure looks like you have a nice piece of land there too.
