Other than the motor mounts in it the bell housing/ flywheel cover should not wear out. The rubber mounts are replaceable.

Not sure how a bell housing wears out? It's just an adapter between the engine and transmission...it has no moving parts... do you mean flex plate?

The housing the outdrive sits on. I've been told it wears out from electrolysis and salt water corrosion and it could leak.so if I'm doing the motor and for peace of mind I was told now is your chance

Ahhh...you have an inboard/outboard...I think what you are calling the bell housing is what most call the gimbal ring or gimbal transom assembly...they can corrode I quess, i think there was a problem with some bravo III drives ...

What i call a bell housing is inside the hull and usually do not "wear" out

As Mike mentioned, the gimbal housing which is part of the whole unit (known as the transom assembly) can and does corrode and there are wear points that need to be examined. In particular, the steering swivel pin area and on Bravo drives, the area around the water tube that passes cooling water thru to the engine.

My previous response was about the flywheel cover which so call a bell housing which is a carry over from the automotive world. Yes as the others have stated the transom assembly bell housing can wear out from corrosion but it depends on how salty the water is as well as how well it it is maintained with paint. jp provided the areas to inspect.

Note all components of the transom assembly are subject to corrosion and will require replacement at sometime.
