Default Windlass

Good morning all,
My windlass stopped working over the weekend, it will go up but when you try to put it down it just acts like there is a lock that wont release. Does any one know what could cause this problem or how to fix it with out replacing the whole thing.

They get worn out. If everything is routed correctly there may be a part that has worn out and malfunctioning.

You may be able to find a rebuild kit or if its an older model just have to buy a new one. Defender.com has pretty good prices on a new windlass compared to other sites.

Make sure the little red switch on the windlass itself didn't get flipped down. This locks the windlass from going down on Lewmar windlasses when cracking it up my hand. Check the connection on the wires from the windlass motor, switch, breaker, and at the battery are clean and tight. If its a Lewmar, the replacement motor is fairly cheap. I have to replace my motor for my V700. $150.00

Thanks for the responses, I took it apart over the week end and found the collar on the back of the middle gear was frozen so I took some break away cleaner and cleaned it put it back together and it is working fine now.
You Tube is a beautiful thing.
