Default Hull Weakness

Been lurking in the forum for over a year, but first reason to post.

Short back story. . . Purchased a 2003 3300 in May 2012, we love the boat. Used the boat all season with no problems. hauled out and had it blocked for the winter. When putting back in I noticed a crack / separation on both sides of the keel near the blocking. Had mechanic look it over and there had been an obvious previous repair. Assumed the previous repair was not done correctly and paid to have it re fixed. Look great when done. Used the boat all this season with only minor maintenance items to do. Hauled the boat out last week and when it was set on the blocking the hull started to crack again in the same areas. No matter how we blocked the keel it seemed to want to separate. Ended up blocking at the four corners for now.

Does anyone know if there is an issue with Maxums in this size / year range that have hull weakness? Does this boat need to be blocked differently than the norm? Was the second fix just as bad as the first? Not sure where to go from here.

The transom is more than likely rotted. Water has gotten into the transom which is a Balsa cored. When water saturates Balsa long enough it turns into a wet paper bag like material.

More than likely water ingression is a result of a failure of the caulk sealing the transom assembly.

To fix it, you'd basically need to remove the engine, cut out the inner skin of the transom in the engine compartment. Then hog out the bad wood. Insert a new sheet of marine plywood epoxy it in, cover it with many layers of fiberglass, then seal it with something like vinylester.
