Default Fuel transfer on my 01 4600, toggle??

My dash lists a transfer toggle and it kept blowing the fuse. I opened the toggle panel and there's like 16g wires going to it. two powered reds and two negs.

First red flag (pun intended) was that both reds were underpowered gauge and powered. Switches should complete the circuit, not join two powers!

Second flag was the pump wires are more like 10g.

The 16g wires I assume are ACC powers.

The 4600 DC manual doesn't have a pump transfer schematic. I was thinking maybe the 16g wires trigger a relay? But both were hot wires, not hot to relay wires.

I didn't see any 10g wires that "should" go to it so I'm a bit lost. I've re-wired most of the helm so I'm pretty familiar with the layout.

Anyone have exp with the fuel transfer setup?

Having to power sources could be to allow from either source. Do you know where they are coming from? Maybe one from each engine and this allows the transfer to work if one or the other engine is off. Just a thought.

Yeah I get two powers, one for each direction of the pump (maybe). Or backup power like you said. Usually pumps just reverse the polarity to go the other way.

They're undersized though unless like I said it goes to a relay.

Is a fuel transfer a build package or maybe it was an addon?

Electric motors can reverse polarity as you say or have separate windings for direction such as Mercruiser’s trim pump.

Resolved.

There were two 10g wires just laying on the bottom of the helm (red/black).

Not sure who did the previous wire hookup, but they had 16g wires running to the 6-pin rocker. Two hots forked to make 4 wires, and one ground forked to make 2 wires. Basically, when you hit the rocker, the hot and ground would short and pop the fuse.

The original (12g) wire that powered the transfer was routed to the MFD chartplotter (instead of adding a new wire) and no clue why they tried running a modified 16g to the transfer rocket.

I added a new 10g wire to a fused box, did my forked power and ground, plugged in my "previously lost" transfer wires and boom, another project fixed.

I bought the boat in the fall for a steal and to date have 53 corrected items recorded. /sigh.
