Default Bravo II Transom Collar Replacement

So the Aurora, my 1996 Maxum 3200, has been hauled out for her biannual maintenance and bottom painting and my mechanic found that there were holes in both Bravo 2 stern drive transom collars had holes behind the Mercruiser labels. Local shop want $3,000 a piece for new collars and $4,500 in labor (10.5K + tax) to replace.

Anyone else have experience with this?

I could be wrong on this but it's worth looking into.
I read that there is a kit to drill a bunch of holes around that label area and cut that piece out to access some steering knuckle. then a plate in the kit is screwed back on and sealed with some sealant.
google it and you should find it.
