Question 4100 SCA vibration

Greetinngs,

I am new and to this forum and new to Maxum as well, in May of this year I purchased a 2000 4100 SCA. A marina queen that has been a freshwater in a covered slip for its entire life, 7.4 liter Mercruiser gas engines with 625 hours. During the sea trial I noticed a slight vibration through the steering wheel and with somebody else at the helm I went down on to the swim platform and into the aft cabin where there was a significant vibration.

I took a well qualified mechanic out for a boat ride and he stated that it was probably cutlass bearings.

The shafts are 1 ¾” diameter and I am wondering if anybody knows the OD of the struts. The boat is in the water so I can't take accurate measurements I'm just wondering if anybody that has a similar boat has ever replaced theirs and what the size is.

My best research is indicating a 1 ¾” x 2 5/8” x 7” buck cutlass bearing. The only other choice would be a 2 3/8 inch unit which strikes me as being a little small

Just looking to see if anyone has first hand knowledge thanks in advance

Definitely sounds like cutlass bearings and probably shaft alignment. So you purchased the boat without a short hall to inspect the bottom and confirm the running gear is the issue. Could also be a bent shaft, bent strut.

This is a job that requires hauling the boat in order to inspect and take measurements. If it's the cutlass bearings, you'll see the wear in the bearing. You will feel the play in the shaft.

I'd pull both shafts and send them, along with the props out to be tested. Since the service is unknown, I would also replace the shaft seals and the stuffing boxes on the rudders.

It's a 25 year old boat. It is likely that most of this has never been serviced.
