Default 2002 Maxum 42 SCR Express

Looking to purchase a 2002 42 SCR and had my sea trial yesterday... The bow started to rise around 1100 RPM and really never came down except for a bit at WOT. The entire interior range of RPM (1200-2500) the bow was pointed straight up at the sky. Tabs appear to work, but did very little. Just trying to find out if this is a specific problem to this model, or if there is something wrong with this particular boat. Any help would be appreciated....

Thanks for the reply. Yes I thought that as well, but the boat hit at and even a bit above its spec speed. about 34 mph....

I never heard any complaints of this model. Are you sure the tabs are working? What size are they?

There isn’t too much stuff store on board near the stern is there?

Mike, I didn't measure the Tabs but here are photos. No additional equipment that I saw. Just the mains and genset

Doesn’t look like bigger tabs will fit but you could add drop fins to them. Did you have the boat surved? And was a moisture test performed to ensure she isn’t water logged?

Thanks Mike. They didn't do a moisture test. Also in doing research on this boat, I find different numbers for the dry weight of the boat. Anyplace from 23,000 lbs to 35,000 lbs. Anyone know where to get an accurate number given that Maxum is out of business ?

MaxumCustomerCare has manuals but the site is not maintained and falling apart. Since Maxum and Bayliner were both owned by Brunswick some Bayliner dealers have been able to help some folks with info.

Honestly, that doesn't sound completely abnormal for a large boat coming on plane. I wouldn't expect any boat of that size to get up on plane until the mid 3,000's. Just pushing throttles forward I would fully expect that between 12,00 - 2,500 there would be bow rise trying to come out of the hole.

May not be a 'problem' with that boat... Bigger tabs, weight distribution (fuel water incl) may help. The added weight of the swim platform may also factor in a bit. Hull was designed w/o that appendage.

at 1500 to 1700 you should hear the turbo kick in and in less than a minute be on plane. For no indecisiveness, I kick it to 2000 rpm and the boat is absolutely on plane in no time. I've had similar performance issues with the trim tabs and had to have them worked on. It was mainly a hydraulic issue (leak). If anyone is getting more than 3000 rpm then you should check for cavitation. The max rpm is designed at 3000. Verify this by taking an rpm reading at the dock with the engines in neutral. The reading from the engines should be 3000. Have a good mechanic go thru your tab system and they'll probably find the issue. My hydraulics weren't extending the tab fully. A simple check is while your at the dock, hook a tab while someone actuates the trim buttons up and down. Even still, my tabs are slower than a snail and I was considering installing tab position indicators. For your immediate problem, while at the dock put the tabs down and leave them there until you can find why they aren't responding well.

OK, Since it wasn't stated, I assumed gas engines. I recant my statement. I have no idea what RPM range should be for Cummins diesel in that model.

What props are on that boat now? I just changed from Nakashimas to DQX. Both are 22"x25pitch x medium cup. If you're still looking for a boat, my 2002 4200 SCR is for sale. I've done a lot of work to where it's almost like new. I laugh a little because it's never new again......it's a constant process but that's all boats. Give me shout if interested. I'm in Miami.
