Default side panel wood rotten

I purchased my first boat this spring, a 1990 2400 scr the boat has been pretty good, everything works as expected aside from a few minor things. My main problem is that the wood under the newer upholstered side panels is so rotted now that the staples are falling out and the vinyl is falling down. im afraid the wood is too far gone to use as a template for the new wood,is there anyplace I can order paper templates for both sides ?

Any help on this project would be greatly appreciated

My guess is that you are going to draw a blank on templates for the side panels, Ace, especially given that the boat is now 23 some years old.

If the panels are still installed my guess would be that there's still enough meat to them to get a decent trace. That, or perhaps using the vinyl itself as a template since it has already taken on the bends and contours. Would be an arduous task, of course, but not impossible.

Ok thanks but I gotta do something because its where the stereo is and also dont like seeing all the rotted wood chips all over the floor all the time. It kinda sucks cuz the rest of the boat is in really good shape. I have found the reason behind this wood rott as the window leaks around the edge and lets water in there when the cover is on

What ever you do, do it soon because it will only get worse. An upholstery shop should be able to tackle the issue.

Replacing rotten wood in boat upholstery kept my wife in business for 30 years. I did the R/R, made new panels, and she recovered. Many times we were able to reuse the vinyl. I started using a light weight plastic in lieu of wood about 20 years ago. It's 3X the price of plywood, but 1/4th the cost of Starboard. We only use stainless hardware/staples. Many a time I built seats and side panels from imagination due to the rot. Usually you can create a paper pattern from the vinyl or by following the dirt lines on the fiberglass. Transfer the pattern to 1/4" or 3/8" plastic. Now do all your cutouts and make new mounting holes that you can either reach or use "christmas trees". Speaker holes always provide an access to get to nuts. Shift levers provide an extra degree of difficulty. When in doubt, leave it to the professional.
