Default Maxum SCR2400 Constant Repair Blues...

I bought a 2000 SCR2400 a year ago, of course had a survey done and "mechanical inspection" but here i am a year later and spending nothing but $$$$$$.

Apparently my 5.7L Mercruiser had an old style of fuel filter that was not easily accessible and needed to be replaced in order to change the fuel filter. $1200.

the steering was very stiff, had that fixed with new cables. $1800

Now they are saying as they were putting it all back together that it was idling rough and upon further inspection my fuel injectors are dumping too much fuel... i have not been quoted yet, I'm waiting but geeze, does it ever end?

has anyone else heard of the injector issue before? apparently I'm buring more fuel than necessary.

i also had a number of minor issues initially too, cap and rooter etc....

any feedback or positive thoughts would be nice ...lol

I had that same engine in my last boat, a 2000 Stingray 240cs. I can't imagine where they came up with $1200 to change out a fuel filter. Do you happen to have the serial number to your engine?

While $1200 is high it’s the cost to replace the old inline metal design with the spin on cartridge fuel filter. The costs you are seeing have nothing to do with being a Maxum or a 2400 it has to do with being an old boat. Boat engines work harder than an automobile engine and are submitted to salt water. Fuel injectors do wear out on boats and cars. IMO boats are used less and most electromechanical devices don’t like that. Fuel that sits for times also gum up carburetors and injectors. I see you’re selling it, someone going to get a nice boat with all the repairs.

I was lucky with my last boat and never had to do much with the engine. That being said, your boat should be TBI, mine was. I could walk you through some tests with fuel injectors, but I'm not sure how to test the TBI system. If you end up brining it home to troubleshoot, people are always here to help. Mike and some others are full of knowledge.

Mike, on my 2000 350 mercruiser, I had a regular spin on fuel filter. Same as my 2003 I have now. Maybe they were including something else in that price. Engine serial number would help clarify some things.

Fuel filter or cool fuel pump? The older cool fuel systems are know to have debris issues that requires replacement.

thank you for the reply, you are correct, it was a big job changing the inline design, obviously i didn't pay someone $1200 to change a normal fuel filter which can be done in 15 minutes. i appreciate your reply.

BOAT= Break Out Another Thousand.....

I've been lucky with my 6.0L Merc. Just annual maintenance pretty much (other than an alternator)...

It happens. It will slow down. We figure it takes about 3 years to get a used boat right.

Sounds like the old fuel filter was letting debris get past to the injectors.
Injectors can be cleaned for quite a bit less than new. But with a new fuel filter, New injectors might really help???
