5.0l stalls when shifting to neutral - Maxum Boat Owners Club

Have a 1999 scr 3000 5.0l with Bravo 2.I start it and warm it up using the throttle only button on the shifter. When I shift back to vertical neutral rpms drop and it stalls. If I'm out in open water I can shift back quickly and then into forward and it won't stall. Changed fuel filter and tried to adjust idle higher and it didn't change anything. Any ideas or thoughts is appreciated.

Are you certain it’s a Bravo 2 and not an Alpha one Gen two? What you described sounds like a shift interrupt issue which is only used on Alphas.

Never mind I’m now getting that you have the shift cable disengaged by having the button pushed in. When it stalls does it restart and idle in neutral? You said out on the water you can shift quickly in and out of gear but will it idle in neutral on the water? Is this a new problem and if so was anything done since it last ran good?

Definitely Bravo 2. Problem just developed. I went out and left the dock no problem. Did a tie up and went to leave and couldn't idle. Started back on the one engine and did the quick shift with the other to run back. Then had to dock with just the one engine. Thank you for your follow up.

Ok, so a new problem with one engine only and the other is operating fine; correct? Is this engine fuel injected or carbureted?

It's a carburetor. No problem with the other engine.

Have you replaced the fuel filter in the carburetor where the fuel line attaches? Does this engine have its own fuel tank? Is the carburetor a TKS or have a choke plate?

It has an electric choke not TKS. It has its own fuel tank. I did not replace that filter. I didn't realize there was one there. I guess l'll start there. I will post an update. Thank you for the information.

Checked the fuel filter at the fuel inlet at the carb and it was fine. Tried to run the boat and still stalls just after it drops below 900rpm.

Since it’s a separate fuel tank I would try running the engine off the other tank. Get some fuel hose and run the port tank hose to the starboard engine and vise versa to see if the problem still exists or switches to the other engine. However you may want to first remove the spin on filter of the engine with the issue and pour its contents into a glass jar to look for contamination or water. If both of these check out ok I would recommend rebuilding the carburetor.
