Default 1997 Maxum SCR 2400 fuel gauge/sender not working

Hello,

The fuel gauge on my 1997 Maxum SCR 2400 is stuck at 3/4 full
What should be the troubleshooting procedure and where the sender is located?

Thanks

The sender is in the fuel tank on the aft end which is exposed in the engine compartment. Look for a round plate on the top of the tank. The center wire is the sender feed, remove it and the gas gauge should read empty. Then ground it and the gauge should read full. If both of these pass the sender is bad.

I did the ground test - the gauge works properly - now to replace / inspect do I need to empty the tank? is it wort to inspect the sender or is better to order a new one.

Thanks

You can remove the sender with half a tank that way it’s well below the top where the senders located. Just replace it. They come in different arm lengths so you need to know the length of the existing one.

Maybe Mike can verify, but some of the "newer" type magnetic senders are a little steadier than float type, but as Mike said you do need to know tank depth.

Yup you’re correct. These have a vertical shaft instead of a float arm which has I higher tendency to bounce.
