Default Wiring issue

Hi, I need some advice regarding the wiring in my 1996 2000SCL. When I bought her, the tachometer hadn't worked in years. When I took it out, the needle was absolutely stuck. Not wanting to spoil what is going to be a renovation project by putting in a new, no-matching instrument, I sent the tacho to Faria-Beede. What a fantastic service! They put my old dial face and glass onto the front of a brand new instrument...all for $100. That included shipping back across the Atlantic.

Anyway, I connected all of the wires to the back of the new instrument and fired her up. The needle flicks when I turn on the power but revs are not indicated. I hunted down a wiring diagram for 1995/6 Maxum sport boats and, sure enough there's a gray wire with a brown stripe for the signal at the back of the tacho. However, I can't find the other end of it! I thought that it would be attached to the -ve terminal on the ignition coil (that's where it is on my classic cars) or to the alternator. No, I can't find it anywhere!

If I run a new wire through, where do I attach it to get the signal?

You're correct the tach sense wire (gray) connects to the negative terminal of the ignition coil.
