Default Steering alignment

I have a 2002 Maxum 1800SR..How can I align the steering wheel so that when the steering wheel is in the centered, straight on position that is actually the direction the boat is travelling..Steering wheel currently seems to be turned almost a 1/4 towards starboard ( right) in order to go straight.

Welcome to the website....your problem you have mentioned with your boat steering is not uncommon. I could say that other than how it looks to you is about all you will fix. This is just natural boat wandering that all boats do. However if you must straighten out the steering wheel take it off with the out drive pointed straight back and then put the steering wheel back on.

The thing is once you do this you will still notice that even with the steering wheel on straight you are not going to steer straight and should be watching the bow of your boat instead of the steering wheel for what direction you are going.

Good luck...

Skoot welcome aboard.

+1 what Roger said. Behind the center trim on the wheel is a nut that holds it on, a puller may be required to remove the wheel from the shaft.

I've owned a lot of boats in my days and other than a Chow Lee I've never had one with the steering wheel aligned right. It's just cosmetic, don't let it bother you.

I will add that if it’s actually ”pulling” in one direction or the other the anode’s with fins sometimes come loose and will cause this if not pointed exactly straight and secure.

However if you have power steering you will have flat anode that installs underneath the cavatation plate.
