Default New owner of a 2007 Maxum 2000 SR3 in Maryland

Today I purchased a 2007 Maxum 2000 SR3. The surveyor finished the survey yesterday and I went along on the sea trial and it runs great. It's fully loaded with the 5.0MPI, bimini top, snap in carpet, wake board tower and 54 fresh water hours. I joined the forum in hopes of learning more about my new boat. This is my 2nd boat, the first being a Triumph 17' Center Console with a Yamah outboard. I've got a lot to learn about the I/O engine and the characteristics of my new boat. Most of my boating will be done on the Chesapeake Bay between Baltimore and Annapolis. My first few projects will be to get a chartplotter/fish finder installed as well as get a 2nd battery with the switch installed for backup. I hope to see some of you on the water.

Glad to hear you had it surveyed and passed. Do you know when the impeller was last changed?

PS: what outdrive does it have?

Welcome aboard, Brian, and congrats on the new boat.

If this the boat will be kept on the trailer then not in use I recommend that flush the engine and drive after each use in salt water. Will help prolong the life of the engine, thermostat, and exhaust manifolds/risers. The 5.0 MPI should be dead reliable, as has been the 5.7 in my 2004 2400 S3.

Don't quote me but I think it has the Alpha 1 drive. I will verify prop size, drive gear ratio and drive model when it stops raining. Impeller was changed at the 50 hr maintenance in July of 2013 along with all fluids and bellows according to maintenance records. I have all paperwork and maintenance records since new. It seems to have been well cared for.

Yes, it will be kept on the trailer. I am a big proponent of preventive maintenance in my equipment and vehicles. My old outboard was flushed and rinsed off every outing with fresh water and "Salt Away". I haven't decided yet if I will use "Salt Away" with this engine. Are there any reasons why I shouldn't?

What would be the best place to get hard copy or digital service manuals for the 5.0 MPI and the Alpha outdrive (after I verify model)?

I don't think salt-away is really necessary if you flush it after every outing, which flushes the salt before it has a chance to solidify. Certainly won't hurt though.

We purchased our 2004 MY used in 2008. We got it with just over 70 hours on it, all accumulated in the Chesapeake Bay. Previous owner cared for it well, kept it on the trailer between uses, with the canvas up (which helped protect the interior), and flushed reguarly. It shows. We have had the boat on the Potomac for the past 4 years (this season will be the 5th) and the drive still looks almost new and there are no signs of any rust/corrosion in the exhaust system.

At the end of our first season, before the onset of winter, we did splurge on a high quality full cover for it and we cover the boat after each use. Really protects the top side and the interior from the sun and does a great job of keeping the boat clean inside and out.

Thanks to all for the information. I'm looking forward to getting the boat out and testing time to plane and top speed of this boat. I plan on taking it to Deep Creek lake in MD this weekend to see if it will do the 48mph on good water verified by GPS.

I got the boat out on the water yesterday. Tach seems inaccurate. It was fine until 3500rpm and then t shot up to 6000. I verified speed at WOT to be 48.6mph. The prop is a Quicksilver 1920p23. I think the drive is a 1.47 ratio based on this chart. http://www.sterndrivereplacement.com...106/gear-chart. SN on drive is Ow842540. Does this mph seem good for a full tank of fuel and 2 adults with 50lbs of gear.

Seems pretty close, though I'd think, with the 5.0 MPI, and given the boat is pretty light, that it might do just little better.

Ya won't really know if it's propped correctly until you can get an RPM reading at WOT. Check the wiring at the back of the tach (dis-connect/re-connect), etc.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

I cleaned up the terminals on the tach and also got a good deal on a Quicksilver Diamond 4 prop sized 14x20 with hub kit for $100 from a local dealer that had it sitting. It's new so I'll be able to get a good baseline this weekend. The prop on the boat had a 1"chip on 1 of the blades so hopefully this one will let me get a good rpm reading.

I'll use the new numbers to choose a good stainless prop and keep it as a spare.

I called up BOE Marine in Maryland and ordered a Garmin Echomap 50S and a Airmar P79 Shoot Thru Hull transducer today. I plan on completing the install this weekend if the weather is good.
