Can’t tell from the pictures if this is what you have but here is a video. This is just one version.

Hi Mike, Thanks for that. Looks like we have the multi point drain system then.

This is the plastic water bottle i can't find a description of yet..

Removed the final piston from bank b this morning and honed the bores. All have come up a treat and are ready for the pistons and new rings.

I believe that orange handle is turned to drain the entire system.

My 2006 5.0 has 5 drain points: one in each manifold, one on both sides of the engine block, and one on the water pump.

Hi all...found a set of rings from Real Steel. Originally it looked like it would cost £45 per cylinder and I have managed to get them for £68 for the entire set.
Manifolds are away to a friend for shot blasting and re-coating. So Tuesday is first chance i get for more work...

Smile Mercruiser 5.0L in a Maxum 1800SR

njh -
First of all can not help on the issues with the 5.0L Merc. I have been about half that with the 3.0L in mine. Still concerned about the transom strength plus mounting the 5.0L in this boat. Wish you well as you get the engine rebuilt. Mercruiser has plenty of installation manuals which will help plus most have the electrical schematics you will need. Like to see you have success! Cheers.

Hi Dean...thanks for concern.
The transom is going to need rebuilding and will be stronger and wider than original spec and will have an extra stainless steel "Anti-twist plate" fitted to help distribute the extra horsepower.
The original fit of the leg is so poor on this boat they didn't even line up the stern gear mount with the hole in the hull resulting in an awful fit.
But I do appreciate your concern and any thoughts you have re issues you know of or think about.

Nick.

What are you doing for the drive unit? I know my 1992 Maxum 1800SR has the Alpha 1 Gen II drive unit. Is that used on the Merc 5.0L? Great that you will be modifying the transom because sure do not want to lose your project that way! I am an aircraft mechanic with many years spent in the engineering test complex dealing with structural integrity so that is why I asked the question. I've seen things destroy themselves under test when they did not meet the requirements. Something you do not want to see. Keep up the great work and keep us posted. Cheers!

Hi all...little update, some pictures added but not huge progress as waiting for the engine parts etc.
Finally got rid of the all the rotten flooring. A real poor bit of planning to put the ply board join right where you enter...
All the rings are replaced and the pistons back in, followers stripped and repaired (springs and retainers etc). Sump and block cleaned and painted.
Next job is to clean the bilge and start work on the transom then paint so I can drop the bottom end in...

Cool Mercruiser 5.0L in a Maxum 1800SR

njh - Looking at your album I see the flooring you have removed. Since I have the same boat ('92 1800SR) when I look at mine it is covered with fiberglass. Was that for your's as well or is the area under the carpet not overcoated? Need to replace the carpet in mine some day so I guess that will tell me. Keep up the great work, doing one fine job so far!

Hi all....some more pictures of transom work, painting and blower re-install..https://photos.app.goo.gl/H2VLhDb9Y4QyRyFF6

deaneries the factory did a poor, poor job on ours compounded by a couple of years outside uncovered. Yours should be glassed too. If in doubt out with the carpet and if alls good then pop a coat of resin and paint on before another carpet goes in maybe...

Cool Maxum Fun Continues

njh - Nick, flooring looks great plus the engine mount structure to support the 5.0. It is different because I have the 3.0L, 4 cyl in mine. Keep up your excellent work. I will let you know when I replace the carpet. Mine has been garaged all it's life except for 3 wks back in '92 when it was purchased. Had termite damage to rebuild on a detached garage that was not completed when my boat arrived from Maxum. Cheers!

Hi all.
So a fabulous summer performing with our band, great festivals, great memories and finally I manage stage one of glassing in the new floor. Boys and girls I can't tell you how great it feels to be able to hop into the boat on the floor I built. I have stripped and sold the A1 Gen 1 leg and replaced it with a gen 2.. so all I need to do is add to the flooring and drop in the engine ready for rebuild... soooo excited!
